Magic Mushrooms and Depression – A Better Cure?

The correlation between magic mushrooms and depression isn’t anything new. Research investigating magic mushrooms’ psychedelic component, psilocybin, was already being conducted as early as 1995

Magic mushrooms, known less formally as “shrooms,” are species of psilocybin-containing mushrooms. Psilocybin is known to produce visual and auditory hallucinations, in addition to intense introspection and a change in consciousness.

Many anecdotal accounts testify that the spiritual, introspective journey that magic mushrooms can provide helped sufferers “reset” their brains

Unfortunately, this naturally-occurring substance is still stigmatized primarily as being a quote-on-quote “hard drug.” Thanks to modern-day popular media, this beneficial and therapeutic substance is widely criticized as a morally and developmentally degenerative substance, much like how weed originally was at the height of “reefer madness.”

However, a new study published this year could be the catalyst in evoking positive change for magic mushrooms and depression.

Magic Mushrooms and Depression – A Natural, Better Replacement for Antidepressants?

A study published on November 4th, 2020, has shown that magic mushrooms, administered under the right conditions, were 4x more effective than traditional antidepressants and led to significant reductions in depressive symptoms.

Researchers conducted a randomized clinical trial with 24 major depressive disorder patients, finding that two doses of psilocybin, when administered with supportive psychotherapy, led to more significant outcomes than the use of traditional antidepressants alone.

Co-author of the study and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the John Hopkins Center for Psychedelic & Consciousness Research, Dr. Alan K. Davis, says that these findings “could be a game-changer.”

A Safer, More Accessible Alternative

Traditional antidepressant prescriptions, for the most part, often miss their mark.

Timelines, dosage sizes, and treatment duration are all factors that play into administering treatment, and traditional anti-depressants can often take weeks, if not months, to take effect. When they do finally take effect, patients often suffer from undesirable side-effects, including suicidal ideation, weight gain, and a decrease in libido

On the other hand, magical mushrooms were only found to produce mild headaches and intense, complicated emotions that patients had to work through during their psychedelic trip.

In many cultures, magic mushrooms are a spiritual and sacred substance, but it’s only recently that their usage has entered into the mainstream. In Silicon Valley, technologists and their ilk have taken to micro-dosing magic mushrooms to “boost their careers.” Actress and celebrity Gwyneth Paltrow even used magic mushrooms while on a company retreat with her staff

One staffer even said that, by the end of the session, she felt like she’d “undergone five years of therapy in five hours.”

While the research and anecdotal effects are certainly promising, the substance isn’t a panacea for mental health sufferers worldwide. Medical advice regarding the diagnosis and treatment of mental health and disorders should be obtained only from a medical professional. Self-medication with magic mushrooms for depression could result in worse outcomes than initially anticipated.

That being said, as more and more casual consumers begin dipping their feet into the world of psychedelics, the stigma and prejudice surrounding magic mushrooms and psychedelics, in general, are starting to dissipate.

Magic mushrooms aren’t a cure-all for anybody suffering from ennui, depression, or any other mental health disorder, but their controlled usage could provide a welcome change in perspective for those open-minded enough to try the experience for themselves.

Magic Mushrooms and You – Worth a Try?

Again, magic mushrooms aren’t a panacea.

The intense introspection, spiritual journey, and complicated emotions that will inevitably surface are a practical stepping-off point for further exploration, but this isn’t to suggest that professional therapy isn’t necessary. There’s no guarantee that you’ll glean any benefits from using magic mushrooms, but the personal enlightenment that they provide can steer you towards the right path.

Whatever your take on magic mushrooms is, it’s essential to remember that shrooms, as with all psychedelic substances, are intense and should not be taken lightly.

If you’re thinking of getting your feet wet, remember to start low and slow. Start with a controlled, minuscule micro-dose amount and ensure that you have a safe, comfortable environment accompanied by close, trusted friends. The experience can be enlightening, but it can also be harrowing too if the proper precautions aren’t taken.

For the best results, 1 Hit Wonder’s magic mushroom micro-dose packs are an excellent option. Accurately dosed, lovingly crafted, and chock full of naturally beneficial herbs and ingredients, these capsules are the perfect introduction to the wonderful world of psychedelics.

Have a good trip, and we’ll see you on the other side!
